Pak PM Shehbaz Sharif echoes Trump’s ceasefire claim, credits his leadership in securing deal with India

It seems that Pakistan is also echoing the words of the United States and has admitted that Washington helped it secure a ceasefire with India during Operation Sindoor. A recent readout from Government of Pakistan regarding Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s meeting with United States President Donald Trump at the Oval Office suggests as much. During the meeting, Sharif’s statement, while praising Trump hints that the US President played a key role in initiating ceasefire.

While Trump has on several occasions claimed that he brokered peace or ceasefire between India and Pakistan, New Delhi has consistently refuted these claims. From the beginning, India has maintained that no third party was involved in securing the ceasefire deal with Pakistan following the Operation Sindoor, which was India’s response to Pahalgam terror attack in April that killed 26.

Moreover, EAM Jaishankar during the debate in parliament on Operation Sindoor had stated that there was no call between PM Modi and Trump between April 22 and June 17 (the date the ceasefire was announced), clearing the air that there was no third party intervention in reaching the ceasefire understanding.

What does the readout state?

The readout of Sharif’s meeting with Trump states: “Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir met with U.S. President Donald J. Trump at the Oval Office today. The Prime Minister lauded President Trump’s “bold, courageous and decisive leadership” for facilitating the Pakistan-India ceasefire and praised his initiative to invite key Muslim world leaders in efforts to bring an immediate end to the conflict in Gaza and restore peace in the Middle East.”

This readout clearly states that Pakistan PM has lauded Trump’s leadership while also admitting his role in facilitating India-Pakistan ceasefire. “The leaders discussed enhancing the bilateral partnership, with the Prime Minister inviting U.S. investment in Pakistan’s key sectors and stressing the need to further enhance security and intelligence cooperation,” the statement added.

Notably, Sharif has also extended an invitation to Trump to undertake an official visit to Pakistan at his convenience.
