‘Before 2014, Manipur’s Development Rate Was Less Than 1%’ Says PM Modi During His Imphal Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates multiple development projects worth more than Rs 1,200 crore at Imphal. This includes the Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhri; IT SEZ Building and New Police Headquarters at Mantripukhri; Manipur Bhawans at Delhi and Kolkata; and Ima Markets, a unique all-women’s market, in 4 districts.

PM Modi said,”…Now this time of the 21st century is the time of the North East. Therefore, the Government of India has continuously given priority to the development of Manipur. As a result, the development rate of Manipur is constantly increasing. Before 2014, the development rate of Manipur was less than one per cent. Now, Manipur is progressing many times faster than before. A new era of infrastructure development has begun in Manipur. The pace of building roads and national highways in Manipur has also increased many times. Work is also being done at a fast pace to reach every village here.”

PM Narendra Modi mentioned, “Any kind of violence in Manipur is unfortunate. This violence is a great injustice to our ancestors and our future generations. Therefore, we have to take Manipur forward on the path of peace and development and we have to do it together. We have to take inspiration from Manipur’s contribution in the freedom struggle of India and in the defence of India. It was the land of Manipur where the Indian National Army hoisted the Indian flag for the first time. Netaji Subhash called Manipur the gateway to India’s freedom. This land has given many heroic sacrifices. Our government is moving forward taking inspiration from every such great personality of Manipur. Our government has taken another big step. Mount Harriet in Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been renamed as Mount Manipur. This is a tribute of 140 crore countrymen of India to the Manipuri freedom fighters…”

While addressing the event, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla said, “The state has faced certain challenges and difficulties in the last two years. Though the State and Central Governments, together with the people of Manipur, have been able to restore peace and harmony to a large extent, more efforts are still required for reconciliation and trust building.”

He also said, “Today we stand at an important moment when we can heal, rebuild and restart towards a new future of the state. My sincere appeal to every citizen of Manipur is to rise above the differences and to work together towards peace and prosperity of our state. There has been a remarkable improvement in the law and order situation, with no major violent incidents… This reflects the joint efforts of the security forces of both the State and the Centre. The State has made remarkable progress across various sectors, from social welfare and infrastructure development to economic empowerment. Most of the health facilities that had been shut down during the law and order problem have been re-opened…The Government has been working tirelessly to support the internally displaced people, an action plan has been drawn to facilitate the early resettlement of affected people. Relief camps are being regularly reviewed to improve living conditions…”
