President Droupadi Murmu Accepts Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Resignation

President Droupadi Murmu has accepted Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation as the Vice President of India and sent it to the Ministry of Home Affairs. The official announcement was made after the Rajya Sabha told its members about the Home Ministry’s notice, dated 22 July, which confirmed that Dhankhar’s resignation takes effect immediately.

Amid the sudden resignation, a slew of allegations has surfaced regarding the abrupt nature of his decision. While Vice President Dhankhar has attributed his resignation to health concerns, opposition members have raised suspicions, suggesting that the reasons go deeper than what has been stated publicly.

Congress General Secretary in charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, pointed out that Mr. Dhankhar chaired the Business Advisory Committee of the Rajya Sabha at 12:30 PM on Monday.

Ministry of Home Affairs had conveyed the resignation of Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankar under Article 67A of the Constitution at 12:11 PM.

Dhankar Resigns

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar stunned the political circles late on Monday night when he resigned from the Constitutional post, citing health reasons. In his sudden resignation on the opening day of the ongoing Monsoon Session through a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar invoked Article 67(a) of the Constitution, which allows a Vice President to step down by submitting a letter and become the third vice president to resign from the office before completing his term.

A former governor of West Bengal, an eminent lawyer, hailing from Rajasthan, Dhankar became the vice president in August 22 and his term was to last till 2027. Incidentally, Trinamool Congress leaders, with whom he had a running battle in the state, expressed shock over the decision and were sad that he would not be sitting in the Chairman’s chair in the Rajya Sabha. Till the evening when many members of parliament were in the parliament building, no one had any inkling of the decision, and it was like a jolt out of the blue. His resignation was with immediate effect.
