Record Breaker! CSK Star Dewald Brevis Sets Test Debut Alight

South Africa’s young batting prodigy, Dewald Brevis, made an unforgettable entry into Test cricket on Saturday (June 28), smashing a world record during his debut against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Widely recognized for his explosive strokeplay in white-ball cricket, particularly in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Brevis brought that same fearless energy into the red-ball arena. Batting at No. 6, the 21-year-old fired a rapid 51 off just 41 balls, racing to his maiden Test fifty in only 38 deliveries — the fastest ever recorded by a debutant in their first innings.

This remarkable feat eclipses all previous records in this category. While New Zealand’s Tim Southee scored a 29-ball fifty on debut in 2008 and England’s Jacob Bethell reached his in 37 balls earlier in 2024, both innings came in the second innings of their respective matches. Brevis, on the other hand, set the benchmark during his very first outing at the crease in Test cricket.

Teaming up with fellow debutant Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Brevis played a crucial role in a 95-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Pretorius, a 19-year-old left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman, also made headlines with a stunning century on debut. He brought up his hundred in just 112 balls, becoming the youngest South African and the fifth-youngest player overall to reach three figures in their first Test.

The run-fest continued as all-rounder Corbin Bosch added more firepower to South Africa’s innings. Bosch remained unbeaten on 100 from 124 balls, helping the visitors pile on a commanding 418 for 9 by stumps on Day 1. The team, led by stand-in skipper Keshav Maharaj, completely dominated proceedings.

Brevis’ blistering knock has not only broken records but has also signaled the arrival of a thrilling new talent in the longest format. His fearless approach and natural flair promise exciting times ahead for South African cricket.
