Fortified Security Measures Ahead Of Amarnath Yatra: Pilgrims And Tourists Urged To Follow Guidelines For A Safe Pilgrimage; IGP Kashmir

As the annual Amarnath pilgrimage approaches, set to begin on July 3, authorities are implementing extensive security arrangements in response to a recent terrorist attack in the Pahalgam area, which serves as one of the main base camps for the yatra. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, V K Birdi, assured pilgrims that every precaution has been taken to ensure their safety during this sacred journey.

In an exclusive interview with News24, IGP Birdi emphasized the comprehensive security framework established to protect both pilgrims and local residents. “We have fortified our security measures to such an extent that even a flying bird will not go unnoticed in Pahalgam and its surroundings,” he said.

The IGP detailed the collaborative efforts of various security agencies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), among others. These agencies have coordinated to secure routes from base camps to transit camps along the yatra path.

The IGP stated that apart from the routine security exercises and already established arrangements, several additional tech-based initiatives have been implemented this year to keep potential threats away from the pilgrimage. One such initiative is the introduction of AI-supported Face Recognition Systems (FRS), which maintains records of all listed Over Ground Workers (OGWs), criminals, and other individuals posing a threat to public safety. This system will alert forces immediately if any such person comes under surveillance.

Birdi urged pilgrims to travel in convoys for added safety and convenience. “This will not only simplify their journey but also enhance security,” he said. To facilitate smooth travel, the traffic police will issue regular advisories, including cut-off timings for movement, ensuring that all travel occurs within designated safe time windows.

In light of potential drone threats, the IGP confirmed that specific no-fly zones have been established along the Baltal and Pahalgam tracks leading to the holy cave. “All necessary measures have been implemented to mitigate any risks associated with aerial surveillance,” he assured.

IGP Kashmir V K Birdi Tic Tac on Amarnath Yatra Security arrangements:

As the countdown to the yatra begins, authorities are committed to ensuring a safe and peaceful pilgrimage for the thousands of devotees expected to participate this year. Pilgrims are encouraged to stay informed about traffic advisories and adhere to safety guidelines for a smooth experience.

With these robust security measures in place, the Amarnath Yatra is poised to proceed as planned, offering devotees a chance to embark on this revered spiritual journey amidst the stunning backdrop of the scenic Kashmir Valley.
