Months of waiting and speculation are over, it is official! Rajkummar Rao, one of the most talented Bollywood actors is going to put his footsteps in the shoes of one of the most iconic characters in Indian cricket, Sourav Ganguly, in one of his upcoming biopic.

Rajkummar himself confirmed the news with a recent interview on NDTV, saying, “Now that Dada has already said it, let me also make it official – yes, I am playing him in his biopic. I am nervous… It’s a huge responsibility, but it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

The announcement arrived soon after Ganguly himself announced the casting. He thinks that Rajkummar is the best actor to fit in the role and even updates on the progress of the movie. “It’s going well. It will be released next December. Shooting starts in January. The pre-production, story writing and scripting take a lot of time. And shooting doesn’t take that much time. It’s about 3 months and then the post-production takes time,” Ganguly told PTI.

The film is expected to be released in December 2026. The director’s name and official title are still unknown. According to industry reports, the project might be led by Vikramaditya Motwane. He had previously collaborated with Rajkummar on the 2016 movie Trapped.

One of the most well-known captains of the Indian cricket team is Sourav Ganguly who represented India from 1992 to 2008. His overall runs scored in Tests and ODIs are 18,575 runs and scored 38 international centuries. Ganguly says that he has no intentions to direct or produce the movie himself.
“I think the right person is doing it… I’ll help him with everything,” he added.

As revealed by the insiders of the film industry, Rajkummar Rao is undertaking an entirely different project before commencing the work on the biopic. He will appear in an Aditya Nimbalkar-directed dark murder comedy. This Netflix movie is in production, the shoot is taking place in Mumbai this month, and prominent shooting places include 1 Aerocity at Marol and Film City at Goregaon.
