Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel may have killed Muhammad Sinwar, the brother of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel has “probably” killed Mohammed Sinwar, Hamas’ elusive de facto leader in Gaza.
“We have eliminated tens of thousands of terrorists,” said Netanyahu at a press conference on Wednesday evening. “We eliminated the leaders of the murderers Deif, Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar and probably Mohammad Sinwar.”

Mohammed Sinwar was an important leader in Hamas’s military group. He is also the brother of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. There were rumours that he died in an airstrike at a hospital in Gaza earlier this month. Until now, neither Hamas nor Israel had confirmed his death. However, the Israeli Prime Minister has now suggested that Sinwar may have been killed in the attack.

Who Was Muhammad Sinwar?

Yahya Sinwar, believed to be the key architect of the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, was killed in Gaza last year in October extensive manhunt by Israeli forces. Muhammad Sinwar is his younger brother. Mohammed Ibrahim Hassan al-Sinwar is a Palestinian politician and militant who has served as the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the leader of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades since October 2024.  He was born in the Khan Yunis refugee camp in Gaza. Israeli officials called him “the shadow” because he worked in secret. Sinwar was an important leader in Hamas. In 2006, he helped kidnap an Israeli soldier named Gilad Shalit. This kidnapping later led to a deal in 2011 where many prisoners were exchanged to free the soldier.

He has spent years in Israeli and Palestinian prisons. At their he developed close ties with other Hamas leadership and joined the military movement of Hamas in 1991.

While spending years in Israeli and Palestinian prisons he developed close ties with other Hamas leadership and joined the military movement of Hamas in 1991.He was regarded as the mastermind behind the deadly Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023.

Hamas Under Siwar

While Sinwar was in charge, Hamas increased its attacks and recruited more people. He was one of the most wanted men by Israeli intelligence. There was also a reward for anyone who could capture him. As a leader, he focused on fighting Israel and strengthening Hamas’s control over Gaza, even during a big humanitarian crisis.

Israel tried many times to kill him. In 2014, Hamas said he had died in the Israel-Gaza war, but that news turned out to be fake.
