US Warns Iran: ‘Shia Nation Cannot Possess Nuclear Weapons; Other Options On Table If Talks Fail’

The United States took a tough stance after the talks over Iran’s nuclear programme failed to conclude. US Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth hinted at a possible military strike if the talks fail. Hegseth said they want Iran to prevent them from advancing in its nuclear programme and their priority is to engage the Iranian leaders through diplomatic channels.

Hegseth warns Iran

While talking to Fox News, Peter Hegseth said, “President Donald Trump is dead serious that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon … He’s also dead serious that if we can’t figure this out at the negotiating table, then there are other options.”

US: ‘Army is ready to go deep and big’

According to YNetNews.com, Hegseth hailed talks with Iran in Oman and termed it positive. He said President Trump does not wish to go for any military action against Iran but they would not allow the country to develop nuclear weapons. He said the United States Army is ready “to go deep and big”.

Israel may join US if military action takes place

On April 13, Trump said he is expected to decide on Iran quickly. The president had already threatened that military action is possible if no deal would take place to halt Iran’s nuclear programme. He already affirmed the “possibility” that Israel may join them if any military action happens on Iran.

‘If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing’

In the last week of March, Trump had said, “If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing—the likes of which they have never seen before,” Trump warned, as quoted by NBC News.  “We have secondary tariffs on Iran, and we’ll probably give it a couple of weeks. If we don’t see any progress, we’re going to impose them. But we will decide on secondary tariffs based on whether or not they agree to a nuclear deal. If they make a deal, then we will never impose secondary tariffs; instead, we will hope they have a great, long, and successful life as a country,” he added.

Talks held between US and Iran in Oman

Talks between the United States and Iran were held in Oman on April 12. The move came after Donald Trump wrote a letter to Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei. Both nations described the talks as “positive and constructive”. The two nations will meet on April 19 for the next round of talks.
