‘LA Olympics 2028 & Beyond!’ – Steve Smith Opens Up On His Future In Competitive Cricket

Yesterday, Australian stand-in ODI skipper Steve Smith announced his retirement after the loss in the semi-final against India in the Champions Trophy 2025.

Smith also revealed that he would continue to play Tests and T20 games and even stated his interest in playing for Australia at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Smith’s Mission For 2027

Australia’s top overseas challenges include five-match Test series in India and England in 2027, after failing to win either in 2023. First, they will compete in the World Test Championship and a home Ashes summer.

Players Who’ve Retired At Around 38-40

By 2027, Steve Smith will turn 38 and might hung his boots after that. Here are some legends who’ve retired around this age:

Player Age at Retirement
Brian Lara 37
Sachin Tendulkar 40
Ricky Ponting 37
Steve Waugh 38

What Smith’s Manager Said

“He hasn’t ruled anything out,” Smith’s manager Warren Craig told this masthead. “He is still enjoying Test cricket and whilst he still has that enjoyment he will continue to play.”

Smith’s longevity in Test cricket has been into question on numerous occasions over the past few years, not least because he has been hesitant to publicly commit to any long-term goals.

As far back as 2022, Smith was hinting at retirement after he was quizzed about Ponting’s Australian record of 41 Test hundreds.

“Not really. No. That’s a long way away,” Smith had said about whether he wanted to surpass Ponting. “I’m not sure. I’m 33, 34 next year. I’m not sure how long I’ll play for but we’ll see. But 41 is certainly a long way away.” Smith Said.
