Champions Trophy 2025, India Vs Pakistan: Why Team India’s 3 Left-Arm Spinners & Varun Chakravarthy’s Omission Could Backfire – Know For More!

As India takes on Pakistan in today’s Champions Trophy 2025 match, one of the most talked-about decisions in the build-up to the game has been India’s choice to go with three left-arm spinners and exclude mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy from the playing XI.

This decision has sparked debates among cricket analysts and fans alike. Was it the right call? Let’s break it down.

The Case For Three Left-arm Spinners

India’s decision to field three left-arm spinners (Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav) against Pakistan is a bold but calculated one. Pakistan, traditionally, has shown vulnerability against quality spin, particularly left-arm orthodox spinners. Jadeja and Axar, with their accuracy and ability to vary the pace, could be highly effective on pitches that offer turn, especially under overcast skies where the ball tends to grip more. Kuldeep, the wrist-spinner, brings an attacking option with his variations in flight and spin, capable of breaking partnerships when the pressure builds.

Against Pakistan’s middle order, which can sometimes struggle against spin bowling, these spinners provide both containment and wicket-taking options. The decision to focus on left-arm spinners specifically also ties into the fact that Pakistan has faced difficulty playing against this kind of attack in recent years, with left-arm spinners often finding success in key match-ups.

Varun Chakravarthy’s Call

Varun Chakravarthy has been a standout performer for India in recent times, offering a unique skill set with his deceptive variations and ability to bowl in the death overs. His exclusion from today’s playing XI raises some eyebrows. Given that the pitches in the Champions Trophy, especially in Dubai are expected to assist spinners, Chakravarthy’s absence may seem like a missed opportunity.

However, the key reason for his omission may be the balance of the team. India might have wanted to go for a more orthodox approach by choosing proven left-arm spinners who could create a controlled middle-over environment. Chakravarthy, while effective in certain conditions, is perhaps seen as a riskier option in this match, where containment is a priority and wickets need to be taken at the right times. His inclusion would also have meant sacrificing one of the all-rounders or a pace bowler, both crucial to maintaining balance in the XI.

Long Term Strategy?

In an ICC tournament like the Champions Trophy, decisions are often made with a longer-term strategy in mind. The inclusion of three left-arm spinners may indicate India’s preparedness for various conditions, especially on pitches that offer spin. The balance between the spinners and pacers, as well as the presence of a deep batting lineup, ensures that India can adapt to different phases of the game.

Given the surface and the nature of Pakistan’s middle-order weaknesses against spin, the team management has opted to focus on an area where they believe India can dominate. Meanwhile, Varun Chakravarthy could still feature in later stages of the tournament, depending on conditions and the opposition’s strengths.
