IND Vs BAN: Ravindra Jadeja Dropped? One Surprise Inclusion Likely In India’s Playing XI

Washington Sundar is poised to make his debut in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 opener against Bangladesh on Thursday, as the team looks to make changes to their playing XI. According to reports, it appears that Ravindra Jadeja or Axar Patel will be dropped, with Jadeja seemingly the more likely candidate to make way.

Animated Discussion Between Gautam Gambhir And Ravindra Jadeja

Star Sports visuals on the night of the match indicate India head coach Gautam Gambhir in a heated discussion with Ravindra Jadeja, which fueled rumors that the all-rounder won’t be in India’s playing XI against Bangladesh. Experts, such as Abhinav Mukund, Piyush Chawla, and Mike Hesson, opined that Gambhir was probably breaking the news to Jadeja about being excluded from the XI.

Axar Patel Or Ravindra Jadeja?

India’s spin bowling unit has sufficient options for the Champions Trophy, with Jadeja and Axar Patel both having similar skill sets. The squad has opted for two specialist spinners and three spin-bowling all-rounders for the championship. The balance of the team might cause one of them to be dropped for the first match against Bangladesh, especially with the Bangladeshi top-order having a good percentage of left-handers.

Why Washington Sundar Earns The Nod

With Bangladesh having left-handers such as openers Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar, and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, the Indian hierarchy is likely to prefer Washington Sundar for his all-round abilities. Mike Hesson also examined Gautam Gambhir’s body language, which suggested that Sundar would drop Jadeja from the XI for the Champions Trophy opener. Gambhir’s preference for Sundar is also highlighted by his previous selection history with Sundar being preferred over others, including Jadeja.

“He’s (Jadeja) not playing,” said Hesson when asked to share his thoughts on visuals of Gambhir talking to Jadeja, where the visual ended with the coach tapping on the all-rounder’s shoulders. “You can tell from the body language that he’s being told he’s not playing. (Gambhir is saying), ‘That’s my decision. I’ve made it. You may not agree with it but thank you very much. You may go on to play the next one but for the first match, we’re playing the off-spinner,” Hesson added.

Axar Patel’s Emergence as India’s Best Left-Arm Spinner

Axar Patel, who has gradually developed in every phase of his cricketing game, is regarded as India’s leading left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder in white-ball cricket. Although Axar was left out of India’s World Cup team, he has improved considerably in his performances and is now fighting it out with Jadeja for a place in the playing XI. If it is a toss between Axar and Jadeja, it appears the latter will be picked to join Sundar, based on his current form and performance.

Gambhir’s Strategy: Washington Sundar’s Big Opportunity

As India gets ready for their Champions Trophy encounter, it’s evident that Washington Sundar has become Gambhir’s go-to man in the spin section. Gambhir’s faith in the Tamil Nadu all-rounder’s skills indicates the move towards new faces in India’s squad, paving the way for an interesting possibility of Sundar making a difference in the tournament.
