No Clean Water In Slums And You Want Cycle Tracks? : Supreme Court

The Supreme Court refused to consider a request for special cycle tracks in cities, saying that more important issues should come first. The judges pointed out problems like housing, clean water, and education, questioning why cycle tracks were a priority when bigger challenges exist.

the Supreme Court denied to consider a request for separate cycle tracks in cities, saying that more important issues should come first.

Judges Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan asked the petitioner why the focus was on cycle tracks when there are bigger problems to address.

The court said that “Go to the slums, find out in what condition people are staying. States do not have money to provide affordable housing and we are daydreaming. People do not have basic amenities, you are daydreaming that there should be cycle tracks,”

The judges also said that “Our priorities are going wrong. We have to get our priorities right. We should be more worried about Article 21 of the Constitution. People don’t have clean water to drink. Government schools are closing down and you want cycle tracks?”

The petition was filed by cycling promoter Davinder Singh Nagi, who wanted cycle tracks to be built across the country to promote safer and eco-friendly transportation.

His lawyer argued that many states already have cycle tracks and even pointed out one outside a gate of the Supreme Court. He said that having dedicated cycle tracks would encourage more people to use bicycles, reducing pollution and traffic congestion.

The lawyer also mentioned the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, a government scheme that helps develop basic facilities in some cities and towns. He suggested that cycle tracks could be included as part of this initiative to improve urban infrastructure.
