Idea Behind The Song
Music composer Jung Jae Il shared his thoughts on the surprising worldwide response to his work and its popularity. In a recent interview with The Chosun Ilbo, he expressed his feelings about this unexpected attention and said. “It’s truly amazing and humbling.”
Jung, who has also worked on films like Okja and Parasite, shared that it was the director Hwang Dong-Hyuk who came up with the idea to use the song ‘Round and Round’ during the game scenes, shared, “The bright and innocent melody of the song was intended to contrast sharply with the betrayal and tension in those moments.”
Jung explained how he increased the overall effect of the song by incorporating mechanical sounds into the mix. He added, “We wanted to go beyond simply using a familiar song. The goal was to heighten immersion and try something innovative.”
Bringing Back the Iconic Tune from Squid Game 1
Squid Game 2 introduced audiences to new music while also bringing back some of the memorable songs from the first season. Jung remarked, “We wanted to convey warmth even amidst tragedy. For example, Shin Hae Chul’s ‘To You’ and Puccini’s ‘Nessun Dorma’ were selected by director Hwang during the scriptwriting phase.”
Released on December 26, 2024, Squid Game 2 quickly became a hit, reaching the top spot in 92 countries on Netflix. Fans can look forward to a third and final season, which is expected to come out in June 2025.
