Jasprit Bumrah vs Australia: 5 Tests & One Hero – How BGT Became The ‘Bumrah Series’

Jasprit Bumrah has well and truly cemented himself as the back-bone of India’s bowling in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 series currently being played with Australia. It has been simply sensational stuff and this series belongs to him alone. In the five Tests that have been played, Bumrah has accounted for 32 wickets-a testament to his consistency. With an average of 13.06, he has single-handedly turned the tide in India’s favor, showing his ability to thrive in pressure situations and prove himself as one of the world’s best fast bowlers. Under his captaincy in the first Team India won dominantly against Aussies, that was the only Test where India seemed dominant.

The Only Indian Bowler To Dominate The Aussies

Bumrah’s impact with the ball has been extraordinary throughout the series. His ability to extract bounce, swing, and pace from both ends of the pitch has left Australian batters struggling. Time and again, Bumrah has come in as a game-changer, taking vital wickets on crucial occasions while breaking partnerships or setting the momentum for India’s bowling attack. He has even been able to bowl in really tough conditions that he has consistently shown, with pitches favoring the home team in Australia no exception.

152.1 Overs Bowled And 32-Wicket Milestone

The incredible feat achieved by Bumrah in this series was his passing one of the most important landmarks in Indian cricket. He took his 32nd wicket in the series, breaking the record held by the great Bishan Singh Bedi for 31 wickets from the 1977/78 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This speaks to Bumrah’s prowess and control in Australian conditions, thus etching him into the record books as one of India’s finest fast bowlers ever.

Bumrah’s 32nd was a dramatic wicket as Marnus Labuschagne of Australia faced a length delivery that went away from the right-hander, only to draw a faint edge from him. Alex Carey behind the wicket snatched it to give Bumrah this historic moment. This further showed that Bumrah could perfectly deliver on target at the right time, making all the difference for India in this series that India fought so hard for.

Bumrah’s Contribution With Bat Due To India’s Batting Collapse

The Sydney Test was a defining aspect of Bumrah’s inning, which the Indian team made during the first innings of that Test. More lethal than what people could witness, Bumrah proved not just with bowling but also from his batting front. Here, India found themselves in an awkward situation, but Bumrah’s gritty 22 runs helped India reach a very modest total of 185. His resilience at the crease, coupled with his unwavering determination, ensured that India could build a competitive total, even if it wasn’t a big one.

That 22-run knock played a key role in providing India with something to work off, allowing the bowlers to defend the score in what proved to be a closely contested game. This contribution underlines Bumrah’s all-round capabilities, where he continues to prove that he is more than just a bowler.

BGT Turned Into The ‘Bumrah Series’

On Day 3 of 5th Test when Jasprit Bumrah did not bowl India’s batting and bowling clearly struggled. It is very clear that Bumrah carried the team on his shoulders this series and has protected India like a shield.

With time, performances by Bumrah have dictated the narrative of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. From breaking partnerships to handing over the momentum back to India at crucial stages with his key wickets, it has made India stay in contention even during those times of need. Thus, with the lead of captaincy and other important contributions, this cricketing stalwart has well proved himself as a hero for the series.
