Good news is on the way for nearly one crore central government employees and pensioners! The roadblock in the 8th Pay Commission process is likely to end soon, as the central government is expected to issue the notification within weeks. This move may speed up the formation of the commission and the appointment of its members. Let us tell you what the sources and the circumstances say!

8th Pay Commission – Where is the roadblock? What is the current Status?

8th pay commission: Currently, the Central Government is actively shaping the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC). ToR is the critical step toward revising salaries, pensions, and allowances for over 50 lakh employees and 65 lakh pensioners, with implementation targeted for January 1, 2026. This has to be finalised first. 8th pay commission was approved and announced by the Union Cabinet on January 16, 2025. Unfortunately, the commission’s ToR drafting has taken over nine months. However, recently, Finance Ministry signals suggest a gazette notification could drop within weeks, possibly by November 2025.

The government is also currently reviewing the suggestions and recommendations made by the states and various departments, including the Finance Department.

8th Pay Commission – When can we expect the Notification?

A notification to kick-start the entire 8th Pay Commission process is expected by the end of November or the first week of December. Sources say the notification cannot be delayed further, as the tenure of the 7th Pay Commission ends on December 31. After the notification is issued, members of the new commission will be appointed, which is a crucial step. Before this, the Terms of Reference (ToR) must be approved.

According to Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in the Rajya Sabha, the government is actively working on the matter. He said, “The notification regarding the 8th Central Pay Commission will be issued at the appropriate time. Once constituted, the chairperson and members of the commission will be appointed.”

Structure of the 8th pay commission

After the notification, the government will appoint:

  • One Chairperson
  • Two full-time members, and
  • Several part-time expert advisors

Once constituted, the commission could be given around 18 months to submit its recommendations to the Finance Ministry.
