The Indian contingent had its best-ever run at Paralympics 2020 and the country finished with a tally of 19 medals. India had only won 12 medals in the Paralympics before the start of the Tokyo event. The Indian players proved their mettle in Tokyo to finish at the 20th spot on the list of the number of medals.
Since the countries are ranked on the basis of gold medal wins, India finished at the 24th spot on the overall tally with 5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals. Shooters Avani Lekhara and Singhraj created history by winning two medals each in their respective events.
India’s run in Tokyo Paralympics finished on Sunday morning. As India’s campaign in the event comes to an end, here’s a look at the country’s medal winners –
Athletics
The Indian contingent won a total of 8 medals in athletics. As many as 4 high jumpers brought home the medal glory while three javelin throwers won medals. Discuss thrower Yogesh Kathuniya returned home with a silver medal. High jumpers Nishad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu also won silver medals while Sharad Kumar brought home a bronze medal.
Sumit Antil was the most successful javelin thrower and won the gold medal. Devendra Jhajharia and Sundar Singh Gurjar clinched silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Shooting
The shooting contingent also enjoyed a purple patch and won 5 medals in different categories. Avani Lekhara spearheaded the shooting contingent and bagged two medals. She won a gold medal in women’s 10m Air Rifle Shooting SH1 and a bronze medal in 50m Rifle 3 positions SH1.
Competing in the Mixed Pistol SH1 event, Manish Narwal won the gold medal. Singhraj emulated Avani and became a two-time medallist at the event. He won bronze in Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 and a silver medal in Mixed 50m Pistol SH1.
Badminton
Making their debuts in Paralympics, the Indian shuttlers proved their mettle and won 4 medals. The last Paralympian to bag a medal for India, Krishna Nagar signed off with a gold medal win in the SH6 category. Pramod Bhagat came up with a great performance and won a gold in the SL6 category on Saturday (September 4).
The District Magistrate of Noida, Suhas Yathiraj won a silver medal in men’s singles SL4 while Manoj Sarkar clinched a bronze medal in the SL3 category. Tarun Dhillon and the team of Pramod and Palak Kohli came close to the medal glory but missed out.
Table tennis
Bhavina Patel created history last week when she won the first medal for the country in table tennis. The ace paddler made the country proud in Tokyo and etched her name in the history books.
Archery
Archer Harvinder Singh won the bronze medal in the Individual Recurve event earlier in the week. Harvinder is the only archer to win a medal for the country in the Paralympics.
